Learning To Decorate With Duvet Covers
by James Hamel
Here is a short story about duvet covers. It starts with my oldest son back when he was in his 20's. At that time Duvet was a name that was not in my vocabulary, but he announced one day that he wanted a duvet cover for Christmas. We, of course, went to the local department store for our education where we found a huge monochrome colored bag with a zipper on one end meant to protect an expensive comforter from soiling. The Cover was cheap and the Duvet was really pricey.
Fast forward to today and we find it easy to find comforters which are affordable and durable, and Duvet covers which are elegant, colorful, stylish, beautiful, and classy. In addition, the duvet covers of today have become affordable. Things have changed and Duvet has been re-defined. Companies such as Le Vele, Blancho, Arya, Dophia and a multitude of others are creating duvet ensembles which can take ones breath away with their sheer beauty and elegance.
When your time comes to actually purchase your first duvet cover ensemble, there are a few items to consider. First, if you plan to cover an existing comforter, it has to be one of the "thin" variety in order to accommodate the cover. The thicker the comforter of course, the harder it is to insert in the cover. Covers which have button closures and not the old fashioned zippered type are easiest to manipulate.
Don't be afraid of color. Look at what's out there with the idea that you are going to be getting something out of the ordinary. The day of the bland bedroom is over. When you've checked out all the possibilities, you head will likely be spinning with ideas, so go for it! Get the one YOU feel is outstanding, and enjoy your new look in the room where you are spending about half your life!

You may come across some of the natural fiber covers while you are looking. Bamboo is especially popular. Take my word for it, waking up in a bed using a natural fiber duvet set is an experience you will not ever be sorry for.
By the way, did you know that the word duvet comes from old French and means "cover"? Surprised? I know folks still argue over whether the comforter or the cover is the duvet, but what does it matter? Looking at what is available today, one can easily use today's duvet covers and ensembles in any decorating scheme and have it come out looking amazingly good. In fact you will likely find yourself inviting your next guests into your bedroom for a quick tour once you have redecorated around your new duvet cover set.
